mind in the gutter 2008

Mind in the gutter 2008: Today’s been a particularly strange day for me. Today at lunch Chloe asked “Mom, what is the most sensitive part of the body?”.
“Uhh.. I.. Uhhh….”. I always knew that I’d have to have The Talk someday, but this wasn’t the way I thought it would be brought up. While I stammer Chloe comes back with, “What’s the most sensitive part of the face?”
“Well, inside your mouth is pretty sensitive”
“Your eyes are really sensitive though too, right?”
“Yes”
Now things are starting to make sense. In the last few months we’ve talked a few times about how sensitive the eyes are and how important it is to remember not to poke anyone’s eyes. Just to be sure that’s what we are talking about I say, “Why do you ask?”
“I don’t know”
“What got you thinking about what is sensitive?”
Shrug.
Oh well. At least I didn’t have to bite the bullet yet.

Then later in the day Alex says “Mom, can I touch myself?” We are in the waiting room at the Sears Automotive department, and while I’d like the kids to entertain themselves, this isn’t what I had in mind, so I’m completely baffled.
“What do you mean? Where do you want to touch yourself?”
Alex points at his face and says “here”. Now things make sense. I’d just sanitized the kids’ hands so they could eat a snack and the rule is once your hands are sanitized you don’t touch anything or you’ll get more germs on your hands and have to be sanitized again. Poor Alex took that to heart and didn’t know if he was allowed to scratch his face without having to have his hands cleaned again.

So, now all I have to do is figure out why my mind goes where it goes when the kids are so obviously innocent.
